MACS Cover Letter

The covering letter

When sending out a resume it should always be accompanied by a covering letter. The covering letter can be a major determinant of success. It should generate interest and motivate the employer to read on. The letter is even more critical if your application is a speculative one and you are not applying as part of a normal recruitment cycle. Remember your objective - get an interview.

An effective covering letter will:

Paragraph 1 - state clearly the position you are applying for and where you saw or heard of it. Mention a personal contact (Careers Fair, Information Session) or their web site. Keep it interesting, so they will read on. If a speculative approach, indicate what sort of work you are interested in

Paragraph 2 - Create interest by telling them what you are doing that is relevant to the position, degree, achievements, subjects completed.

Paragraph 3 - Highlight the criteria, giving evidence of how acquired using your work experience, voluntary work experience, on campus activities, travel. Demonstrate your knowledge their company and the industry.

Paragraph 4 - remember the purpose of the application get an interview - state this clearly e.g. Please contact me on (telephone number) so we can organize a time to discuss the above in detail.

Use a focused and business-like approach. Be clear and concise and be careful of typos, spelling and grammar and overall appearance. This is very important for a covering letter. Ask someone to check it for you.
